The Great Flood

Bereshith (Genesis) 6

Adam’s progeny increase on the earth, the set-apart lands for the chosen people in the Mesopotamia and Ur regions which is now the areas of Iraq, Persia, Syria and Jordan. This is the area that was later inundated by Noah’s flood.

1 -  3 And it came to be, when men began to increase on the face of the earth, and daughters were born to them, that the sons of Elohim  saw the daughters of men, that they were good. And they took wives for themselves of all whom they chose. And Yahuah said, “My Spirit shall not strive with man forever in his going astray. He is flesh, and his days shall be one hundred and twenty years”.

4 The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of Elohim came in to the daughters of men and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, the men of name.

The giants are known as Nephilim, Anakim and Rephaim in the scriptures. Goliath was one of these giants also King Og whose bed was about 13 feet long. The giants brought much evil knowledge to mankind and were completely without conscience. This was satan’s way to prevent the coming of the Messiah by polluting the bloodline of mankind. This is why we are given the statement that Noah was perfect in his generations with an unpolluted genealogy.

The fallen angels returned after the flood to pollute the blood of mankind again.

5- 7 And Yahuah saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And Yahuah was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart. And Yahuah said,” I am going to wipe off man whom I have created from the face of the earth, both man and beast, creeping creature and birds of the heavens, for I am sorry that I have made them”.

8 But Noah found favour in the eyes of Yahuah.

From Noah’s unpolluted line the Messiah would be born.

Noah refrained from taking a wife until his 500th year as Elohim had told him He was going to destroy the then known world with a flood. The area to be flooded was the Mesopotamia, Syria and Arabia regions. (See “Map of probable area of flood” in our Articles)

In verses 9, 10 Noah walked with Elohim, perfect in his generations.

He and Naamah, the daughter of Enoch, had three sons, Shem, Ham and Yepheth.  Ref. Book of Yahshar (Jasher) book 1, chapter 5, verses 12 - 15. (See our Article “Birth of Noah”)

11 - 13 And the earth was corrupt before Elohim, and the earth was filled with violence. And Elohim looked upon the earth and saw that it was corrupt - for all flesh had corrupted their way on the earth - and Elohim said to Noah, “The end of all flesh has come before Me, for the earth is filled with violence through them. And see, I am going to destroy them from the earth”.

The gentile nations were not under this edict because at this stage they did not know Yahuah and had not been given any instructions. To this day these nations do not know Yahuah but worship their false gods of all kinds. However, groups of people and individuals do become grafted in to Yahuah’s people when they seek Him and His truth.

In verses 14 - 16 Instructions to Noah about how to build an ark with the dimensions of the vessel. Most people believe the ark was a type of boat but it was not meant to navigate the waters but only to float above the flood. It would have been rectangular in shape with floors like a three storey building.

It would have been too small to hold two of every creature in the world and seven pairs of the clean animals and birds as there are millions of species of animals in the world. The animals that are mentioned in scripture were native to the area and collected by Noah (Book of Yahshar Ch 5: 30) and taken onto the ark. These would have been accommodated within the limited space available.

(See last page of this article for likely list of animals that would have been on the ark)

Flood coming, all of Noah’s family of eight people only to be on the ark. The others were to be destroyed in the flood and no one else was invited or allowed to enter the ark.

17 “And see, I Myself am bringing flood waters on the earth, to destroy all flesh in which is the breath of life from under the heavens, all that is on the earth is to die”.

This refers to the people and animals in the area of the flood (See Articles “All the Earth” and “Map of flood area”)

18, 19  “And I shall establish My covenant with you, and you shall come into the ark, you and your sons and your wife and your sons’ wives with you. And of all the living creatures of all flesh, two of each, you are to bring into the ark, to keep them alive with you - a male and a female”.

Food had to be collected for the people and animals, a huge amount which had to be enough to keep them for more than a year, from the 17th day of the 2nd month of the 600th year of Noah’s life (Bereshith 7: 11) to the 21st day of the 2nd month of the 601st year of his life (Bereshith 8: 14). After this time the crops and vineyards had to be planted and grown to fruition.

22 And Noah did according to all that Elohim commanded him so he did.

Bereshith 7

Please read this chapter for the account of the flood. The number of days it rained, forty, is always the number of trial, testing and probation for Yahuah’s people.

Verses 21, 22 “And all flesh died that moved on the earth, birds and cattle and beasts and every creeping creature that creeps on the earth, and all mankind. All in whose nostrils was the breath of the spirit of life, all that was on the dry land died”.

Only the eight people in the ark survived as a special set-apart people of Yahuah. The gentiles who were created in Bereshith 1: 26, 27 were not a part of this calamity and did not perish in the flood as it was confined to the area of the set-apart people.

Yahuah promised to never again flood the earth. There have been many floods since that time across the world but never again in the Mesopotamia region.

(Refer to our Articles “All the Earth” and “Map of probable area of  flood”)

Bereshith 8

This chapter is the account of the end of the flood.

Bereshith 9

In verses 1, 2 Noah and his sons were told to bear fruit and increase and were given control over all the beasts, birds and fish.

In verse 3 They were given any moving creature for food also all green plants. They knew which animals were “clean or unclean” as Noah knew the difference, having recently offered on an altar a sacrifice of clean animals (8: 20) and they had to be able to sort out the numbers to take onto the ark e.g. seven pairs of clean animals and one pair of unclean animals. Therefore in no way did Noah and his family eat unclean foods.

In verses 4 - 6 the prohibition of taking of blood.

In verse 7 Noah sons started to beget children. The sons’ wives were sisters and all were granddaughters of Methuselah. Three brothers were married to three sisters. Ref. Book of Yahshar 5: 35. (See also our Article “Birth of Noah”)

Therefore all the families were of one bloodline.

He made all things, plants and animals, to reproduce “after their kind” therefore Noah and his wife could not have produced three different ethnic groups and different skin colours.

In verses 8 - 11 Establishment of the Covenant with Noah in which Yahuah promised never again to flood the land to destroy all living creatures.

This is the second of seven Covenants of Yahuah to mankind.

12 - 17 The Rainbow set in the heavens as a sign of Yahuah’s confirmation of the Covenant with Noah.

Bereshith (Genesis) 9: 18, 19  And the sons of Noah who went out of the ark were Shem, Ham and Yepheth. And Ham was the father of Canaan. These three were the sons of Noah, and all the earth was overspread from them.

20, 21 And Noah, a man of the soil, began and planted a vineyard. Noah became drunk on wine and became uncovered in his tent. And he drank of the wine and was drunk, and became uncovered in his tent.

22 And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brothers outside.

Ref. Wayyiqra (Leviticus) 18: 5 - 8 These scriptures in Leviticus show clearly that “his father’s nakedness” is his father’s wife, Ham’s mother. He must have “uncovered” his mother resulting in a curse on his offspring (Canaan) from then on.

23 So Shem and Yapheth took a garment, laid it on both their shoulders, and went backward and covered the nakedness of their father, but their faces were turned away, and they did not see their father’s nakedness.

Shem and Yapheth were carefully covering their mother without looking at her. They would not have needed to walk backwards and avert their eyes if it had been their father they were covering, but they honoured their mother and respected her body which had been violated by their brother Ham.

Canaan was the father of Tsidon, his first born and Heth from whence came the Hittites, Yebusites, Amorites, Girgashites, Hiwwites, Arqites, Sinites, Arwadites, Tsemarites and the Hamathites. These are the inhabitants of the country of Canaan which Yehoshua (Joshua) was instructed by Yahuah to eradicate as they were heathens and enemies of Yisrael.

It is clear that Ham did much more than see his father with his clothing disarranged as Noah cursed him and his descendants from that time. It is an interesting point that the meaning of the name of Ham in the Hebrew is “hot, inflamed in self”, and that Canaan means “humiliated”. (Ref. Strong’s Concordance)

Regarding Ham’s son Canaan, the following verses tell us of his fate.

25 - 27 And Noah said, “Cursed is Canaan, let him become a servant of servants to his brothers. Blessed be Yahuah the Elohim of Shem, and let Canaan become his servant. Let Elohim enlarge Yepheth, and let him dwell in the tents of Shem and let Canaan become his servant”.

28, 29 Noah lived on after the flood and he died when he was 950 years old.

Bereshith 10

In verses 1 - 5 The genealogy of Yepheth. Notable names are Gomer, Magog, Madai, Yawan, Tubal and Meshek. Sons of Gomer were Ashkenaz and Togarmah. The descendants of Yepheth were the coastland peoples of the near nations. They settled in the coastal areas of the Caspian, Black, Aegean and Adriatic Sea regions as well as Mediterranean islands. These are gentile people to whom Sha’ul (Paul) ministered. (See our Article “Who are the Gentiles” regarding Yepheth and his descendants)

In verses 6, 7 The genealogy of Ham. Notable names are Cush, settled in Shinar and Babylon area (not Ethiopia), Mitsrayim (Egypt), Put (Libya) and Canaan (Palestine). These also are gentiles, now mostly Muslims.

In verses 8 - 12 Cush was the father of evil Nimrod and dwelt in the land of Shinar which is Iraq today, and built large cities there, Babel, Erek, Akkad, Kalneh, Nineveh, Kelah and Resen, all notorious for their sungod worship and paganism.

In Yirmeyahu (Jeremiah) 13: 23 it says “Does a Cushite change the colour of his skin or a leopard its spots?” It is widely claimed that the descendants of Cush were born black and populated Africa. The gentile people of Africa were created long before this time as told in Bereshith 1:26,27.

It is not possible for Noah’s three sons to bring forth different nations as the three sons of Noah married three sisters, all daughters of Methuselah. All creatures produce offspring “after their kind”. The Cushites were descendants of Ham and lived in the land of Shinar in those days, later known as Babylon. From Ham’s sons came the Philistines, Hittites, Yebusites, Amorites, Girgashites, Hivites, Arqites, Sinites, Arvadites, Tsemarites and Hamathites, the heathen people who occupied the promised land of Yisrael.

The descendants of Ham were all cursed people who opposed Elohim, the people who Yehoshua (Joshua) later was ordered to exterminate. Dare we say - they were a veritable rogues’ gallery!!!

(See our Article “Who Were the Cushites”. They were not Ethiopians but people from the land of Shinar, once known as Mesopotamia and now called Iraq)

In verses 21 - 23 A short genealogy of Shem, Eber and Peleg - more in Chapter 11.

In their time the peoples of the earth were divided from each other during the building of Nimrod’s Tower of Babel. From Peleg descended the righteous line of Abraham, Moses, David through to Yahusha the Messiah. From Eber who was in that line came the name Hebrews.

Why is the account of Noah and the flood so important to us today?

Yahusha gave us a warning himself recorded in Matthew 24:37 about the end of this age. Speaking to His disciples He said “As it was in the days of Noah, so also shall the coming of the son of Adam be, for as they were in the days before the flood, eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark and they did not know until the flood came and took them all away, so also shall the coming of the Son of Adam be”.

We look forward to the fulfilment of these prophecies and believe that the time is very near. Let us all be aware of world events happening now and leading to the times warned about in 2nd Peter 2:5 and 2nd Peter 3:10-12.

Animals probably taken into the Ark

Animals which are mentioned in scripture were all indigenous to the area of the flood and would have been taken into Noah’s  ark.

The clean animals: Cattle, sheep, deer, goats and antelope.

The unclean animals: Donkeys, horses, camels, pigs, dogs, foxes, wolves, hares, moles, conies, ferrets, weasels, bears and lion and leopard whelps (both of which would have been fed on milk).

Birds mentioned in scripture are -

The clean birds: Poultry, pigeons, doves and quail.

The unclean birds: Eagles, hawks, vultures, ravens, owls, pelicans, swans, storks, herons, cuckoos and sparrows.

The unclean creeping creatures: Snakes, lizards, dragons, chameleons, tortoises.

Animals which would not have been taken into the ark

There are millions of animal species in the world and some of those which are from other lands and continents apart from the area of the flood in the Mesopotamia region are -

Animals having special requirements: Giraffes, llamas, koalas, pandas, possums, sloths, squirrels, most of the apes and monkeys. These all live on tree foliage or fruit and have special needs e.g. the koalas and pandas each eat only one food, eucalyptus leaves and bamboo.

Carnivorous animals: Pumas, tigers, coyotes, hyenas, jackals, brown bears, Tasmanian tigers and Tasmanian devils. This is an example of carnivorous animals and it appears that no meat was eaten on the ark as the animals which were taken into the ark also came off when the flood subsided.

Animals which must have water for survival: Hippopotamus, polar bears, otters, beavers, seals, penguins, platypus, crocodiles and alligators. Many species of animals and birds live on fish. None of these would have been in the ark.

Animals which live only on termites or ants: Armadillos, echidnas and anteaters. These would not have been in the ark.

Elephants and rhinoceros were not indigenous to the area of the flood.
